Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning is active learning in the outdoors. In Outdoor Learning participants learn through what they do, through what they encounter and through what they discover. Participants learn about the outdoors, themselves and each other, while also learning outdoor skills.  Outdoor Learning is something that we do a lot because we are lucky enough to have amazing green spaces both on our school site and in the local area.

All of our children will regularly experience different kinds of Outdoor Learning.  Sometimes, lessons simply take place outside in our outdoor classroom, on the playground or on our field.  We’ve seen

historic reenactments one week and then outside phonics another.  Usually, our children learn about the environment and sustainability when learning outside.  We’ve seen our children harvesting fruit from our fruit trees as well as setting up science investigations about the weather.  Recently, we were lucky enough to set up a motion activated camera and catch a glimpse of a badger living on site!

We are also luck enough to have our ‘Woods of Wonder’ on site.  This allows us to carry out regular Forest School sessions. Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.

We have been awarded the Green Flag Eco Schools Award with Distinction which is the highest mark available. The Eco-Schools programme is a national award scheme that promotes impactful environmental actions for schools.

We are delighted to have been awarded the Modeshift Stars Platinum Award which is the highest award available.  Modeshift STARS is a national award scheme to promote safer, greener, healthier travel.
