Modern Foreign Languages

By the end of Year 6, we want children at Oughtibridge Primary school to be able to understand the concepts below and to be able to answer these key questions about them.

Communication – How do we communicate effectively in different situations?

Grammar – How is spoken and written language organised?

Cultural Awareness – Where do people speak Spanish and what similarities and difference exist between their culture and ours?

Sound and Intonation – How can we use our knowledge of Spanish phonics to communicate accurately?

Expression – How can we communicate our needs, thoughts and feelings using the words we know?

All children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) are taught a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) and at Oughtibridge, we learn Spanish. In FS and KS1, Spanish is encouraged by staff through greetings, songs, routines and counting. We want the children to be articulate, communicative and culturally aware.

Spanish has become embedded in daily life at Oughtibridge Primary School. Through the ‘tasters’ of Spanish in FS and KS1, the children arrive in KS2 as enthusiastic learners, ready to fully participate in the language lessons. All children in KS2 experience reading, writing, speaking and listening in the language.
