Geography

By the end of Year 6, we want children at Oughtibridge Primary school to be able to understand the concepts below and to be able to answer these key questions about them.

Place – Where are places of interest in relation to each other and Oughtibridge and what are their geographical features?

Local Geography – What are the physical and human characteristics of our village and wider local area?

Environment – What different biomes exist in the world, what are their features and how do humans and animals adapt to them?

Sustainability and Change – What are the long terms effects of human activity on the environment and how can we change this?

Investigation – What resources can we use to draw conclusions about the world?

All children are nurtured as geographers and gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of physical and human geography. They are taught to explore their place in the wider world. They are taught to deeply understand the key concepts within the geography curriculum and how this applies to them and continues to change over time.

The fundamental role in our Geography teaching lies in helping children to understand the world, its environments and places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. It encourages children to appreciate how the world works and teaches them of the interconnections between concepts such as community, cultural diversity, interdependence and sustainability.
