Mathematics

By the end of Year 6, we want children at Oughtibridge Primary school to be able to understand the concepts below and to be able to answer these key questions about them.
Place Value – How does place value underpin the understanding of our number system?
Calculations – How can we use the four rules to improve number fluency and solve Mathematical problems?
Fractions and Decimals – How can we represent amounts that are less than a whole?
Measures – How can we quantify and describe amounts?
Statistics – How can we collect and use data to form conclusions about the world we live in?
Geometry – What are the relationships between the size, shape and position of objects in the world around us?
It is important that as well as teaching the key knowledge, skills and concepts in Mathematics, we inspire children to enjoy Mathematics and to understand how mathematics relates to the real world. Children are encouraged to be resilient when solving problems and to think creatively in order to embed their skills.
These skills are developed through a mastery approach to mathematics. Children learn using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods which helps them acquire a deep long-term, secure understanding of Mathematics. Lessons are sequenced in a logical progression to ensure skills are continuously built upon and revisited which leads to a greater understanding of Mathematics.
