Design and Technology

By the end of Year 6, we want children at Oughtibridge Primary school to be able to understand the concepts below and to be able to answer these key questions about them.

Research – How do designers take inspiration from existing products?

Design – How do designs show the function and look of a product?

Technology – How is Scientific knowledge used to solve problems in different communities?

Innovation – How do people create new concepts and ideas and use these to make improvements to our lives?

Evaluation – How can reflecting on what we do lead to further improvements?

Safety – How can we make sure that we are all safe and why is this important?

These skills are developed through D and T (Design and Technology) as children are given opportunities to master skills correctly, design, make, evaluate and improve and to take inspiration from design throughout history.

D and T is an intricate part of our day-to-day lives and it is therefore important that our children are taught how this subject is of great importance in our rapidly changing world. Children are encouraged to think creatively in order to solve problems and/or make improvements to existing ideas and products. It is through these methods that they can make positive changes to their own and others’ lives
